Tourism takes center stage of the fifth sculpture of 'Calella, city of sculptures' project

As part of the celebration yesterday of the World Tourism Day, the sculpture of ‘The Suitcase’ was inaugurated as a tribute to Calella and its history as a tourist city.

Yesterday, coinciding with the World Tourism Day, the mayor of Calella, Montserrat Candini, and the president of the Diputación de Barcelona, Marc Castells, inaugurated the sculpture "The Suitcase", the fifth of the project "Calella, city of sculptures" . The sculpture, made by the sculptor Ramon Oms, is located at the entrance of the Tourism Museum.

The sculpture represents a suitcase full of books as a symbol of the Year of Cultural Tourism 2018. It is an initiative of the Catalan Tourism Agency that joins the declaration of the year 2018 as the European Year of Cultural Heritage by the European Parliament, with the objective of raising públic awareness of European history and vàlues, as well as strengthening its sense of cultural identity.

Montserrat Candini said: "We have a long history as a tourist municipality, in fact 65 years ago, and there are many generations that have made Calella a city with economic dynamism, knowledge, promotion and, above all, with a culture of living the world of business and the world of economic activity that has a lot to do with cultural diversity."

For his part, the President of the Diputación de Barcelona, Marc Castells, also stated that "In Calella you make a great bet for public space, for culture and, therefore, in this European Year of Cultural Heritage, you could not have done it better", highlighting that with the new sculpture "you have linked what, how and where".

Characters that define the culture and history of Calella become part as bronze sculptures of our urban landscape thanks to the project "Calella, city of sculptures".
