The WTM is one of the most important and prestigious international events aimed at professionals in the tourism industry.
One more year, Calella has taken part at the World Travel Market in London, one of the most important and most prestigious international fairs of the tourism industry, which was held from November 6 to 8.
The World Travel Market (WTM) is an event aimed exclusively at agents and professionals in the sector and is attended by more than 5,000 exhibitors from more than 180 countries and 3,000 journalists from around the world. Given its suitability for the promotion of the tourist offer of Calella and the province of Barcelona, and based on the results obtained on the participation in the contest of previous editions, Calella (together with Malgrat, Santa Susanna, Castelldefels and Sitges) has been present at the stand of the Office of Tourism Promotion of the Diputació de Barcelona, under the umbrella of the Catalan Tourism Agency.
The fair allowed the delegation of Calella to have a schedule of interviews and meetings with several tour operators and specialized media in the tourism sector. The promotion campaign has been reinforced with diverse material that contains, among others, the video of the destination "Calella Moments of Happiness", information on family and sports tourism, cycling and accommodation, as well as the agenda of cultural and sporting events in the city for the next 2018.
Sun, beach and family activities, the main attractions of British tourists
According to the data relative to the profile type of British tourist published by the Catalan Tourism Agency, the main reasons for traveling are still leisure, family tourism and sun and beach, which are complemented by other experiences such as sports activities, nature and gastronomy. Cultural tourism and city breaks also stand out.
We must bear in mind the importance of climate as a key factor for the British, who enjoy holidays as a necessity and not a luxury. Likewise, it is considered a direct causal relationship between the weather situation and the reservations made from the United Kingdom. In this sense, the British market is of great interest to our destination, as we can offer sea, sun and good weather for many months of the year, and this is a key attraction factor for the deseasonalization of this market.
This season in Calella, the figures for the British market have experienced a slight increase between the months of May and September. This year a total of 218,421 overnight stays were registered (+13,330 compared to May-September 2016). Most of this increase (+8,152) took place during the month of May, at the beginning of the tourist season. As for the rest of the months, the number of overnight stays was very similar to the previous year, showing a fairly stable behaviour throughout the year.
With October data awaiting confirmation, the British market ranks 4th, behind Spanish, Russian and German. However, it is observed a very positive behaviour of this market during 2017, showing a progressive increase of visits in relation to the data of 2016. Otherwise, the visits to the website calellabarcelona.com from the United Kingdom have grown by 59% with respect to the previous year. Regarding the demographic data of the visits, the origin is mainly located in the cities of London, Birmingham and Glasgow. In relation to the most visited contents by British users, include: beaches, shopping, activities (things to do), accommodation, the Lighthouse of Calella and how to get there.
