The Tourist Office, the Local Police and the three beaches of Calella -Platja Gran, Platja de Garbí and Platja de les Roques-, as well as four accommodation establishments and two service companies, have been recognized with the Biosphere certification for its commitment to sustainability.

This new sign is promoted by the Diputació de Barcelona along with the Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona and the Institute of Responsible Tourism (ITR), with the aim of promoting good practices in the sustainable management of tourism companies and services, There are diferent entities and destinations distinguished such as accommodation, restaurants, tourist offices, museums, agencies and beaches, among others.

The distinctive

The "Commitment to Sustainability Biosphere" wants to extend the culture of tourism sustainability to companies, tourist services and destinations in the Barcelona counties. This is a program whose main purpose is to implement more sustainable management in all the agents of a tourist destination. As a result of this voluntary implementation, the participating tourist services obtain the sign of “Commitment to Biosphere Sustainability”, annually renewable.

Up to 245 companies and services in the demarcation of Barcelona have received the distinctive, of which forty belong to the Maresme, the region with more companies and affiliated entities.

The certification implies assuming the principles of sustainable management, economic and social development, conservation and improvement of cultural heritage, environmental conservation, quality and safety and the involvement of the visitor. The sign becomes visible with plaques of the distinctive "Biosphere", diplomas to companies and with flags in the case of beaches.

Obtaining the distinctive "Biosphere Sustainability Commitment" is part of the execution of the Calella road map to become a Smart Tourist Destination (STD).
